Engineering a Better AI Prime HD Light Shade and Diffuser for Reef Aquariums

The Aqua Illumination Prime HD has earned its reputation as one of the most popular LED reef aquarium lights on the market. Why I Designed an AI Prime HD Light Shade

After spending time with the Aqua Illumination Prime HD, I noticed something many reef keepers had already mentioned online.

The light looked fantastic over the aquarium—but it was often just as bright everywhere else.

Rather than purchasing a generic accessory, I wanted to design a solution specifically around the geometry of the Prime HD.

The goal wasn’t simply to block light.

It was to create an accessory that looked like it belonged on the fixture from the factory while improving the overall reef-keeping experience.

Defining the Design Goals

The first step was carefully measuring the Prime HD housing and creating an accurate digital reference model.
