Aqua Illumination Nero 5 Fish Guard & Anemone Guard Design and Creation
Engineering a Better Way to Protect Fish, Anemones, and Reef Tank Livestock
The Aqua Illumination Nero 5 has become one of the most respected wave pumps in the reef aquarium hobby. Known for its compact footprint, wide flow pattern, quiet operation, and exceptional performance, the Nero 5 is trusted by reef keepers around the world to create the water movement that corals need to thrive.
Whether you're maintaining a mixed reef, SPS-dominated aquarium, LPS reef, or soft coral tank, proper water circulation is essential to long-term success.
Unfortunately, even one of the best wave pumps available can present a serious danger to the animals we work so hard to protect.
Wandering Bubble Tip Anemones, Rock Flower Anemones, small fish, shrimp, snails, and other reef inhabitants can all find themselves in contact with an unprotected powerhead intake.
That concern inspired this project.
In this video, I take you behind the scenes of the complete design, CAD modeling, 3D printing, testing, and production process used to create a custom Nero 5 Fish Guard and Anemone Guard designed specifically for the Aqua Illumination Nero 5.
The objective wasn't simply to create another pump guard.
The goal was to engineer a solution that provides meaningful livestock protection while preserving the incredible flow performance that makes the Nero 5 one of the most popular circulation pumps in the reef hobby.
Why Does the Nero 5 Need a Fish Guard?
Every experienced reef keeper has heard stories of wandering anemones finding their way into powerheads.
Unfortunately, many have experienced it themselves.
A Bubble Tip Anemone may remain perfectly stationary for months before suddenly deciding to relocate overnight.
Changes in lighting, water chemistry, neighboring corals, or flow patterns can all trigger movement.
If an anemone reaches an unprotected pump intake, the results can be devastating.
Potential consequences include:
- Loss of expensive anemones
- Nutrient spikes
- Cloudy water
- Coral damage
- Fish stress
- Entire tank crashes in severe cases
Fish and invertebrates face similar risks.
Small clownfish, gobies, blennies, firefish, shrimp, snails, and juvenile fish can occasionally find themselves too close to a powerful intake.
A properly designed Fish Guard adds another level of protection while allowing the pump to continue delivering the flow your reef depends on.
Why I Designed a Nero 5 Fish Guard
Over the years I've designed Fish Guards and Anemone Guards for many of today's most popular reef aquarium wave pumps.
Projects have included:
- Nero 3
- SLW-5
- SLW-10
- SLW-20
- Hygger 1600
- Additional wave pumps currently in development
The Nero 5 was one of the most requested designs from the reefing community.
Rather than adapting an existing design, I wanted to engineer something specifically around the unique geometry of the Nero 5.
Every curve, intake opening, and mounting surface was measured to create a guard that looked like it belonged on the pump from the factory.
Defining the Engineering Goals
Every successful product begins with clearly defining the design objectives.
For the Nero 5 Fish Guard, those goals included:
Maximum Livestock Protection
Protect fish, anemones, shrimp, snails, and other reef inhabitants from the intake.
Preserve Water Flow
The Nero 5 is known for its broad, efficient flow pattern.
The guard needed to maintain as much of that performance as possible.
Easy Installation
No tools.
No permanent modifications.
Simply install the guard and enjoy added peace of mind.
Professional Appearance
Many aftermarket accessories appear oversized or improvised.
This design was intended to complement the aesthetics of the Nero 5 while maintaining its compact footprint.
Long-Term Durability
Saltwater environments are unforgiving.
The guard needed to withstand years of continuous aquarium use.
Creating a Digital Nero 5 Reference Model
Every product starts with accurate measurements.
The Nero 5 was carefully measured and recreated inside CAD software to create an accurate digital representation of the pump.
The digital model included:
- Intake geometry
- Mounting surfaces
- Pump housing
- Curved exterior surfaces
- Internal clearances
- Attachment features
This virtual model became the foundation for every stage of development.
Designing the Fish Guard
Once the digital pump model was complete, attention shifted toward solving one difficult engineering challenge:
How do you maximize protection without sacrificing flow?
Several competing factors had to be balanced.
Smaller openings increase protection but reduce water movement.
Larger openings improve flow but provide less protection.
Numerous design concepts were explored before arriving at the final configuration.
Every rib, opening, and structural feature was optimized to preserve circulation while improving livestock safety.
Engineering the Nero 5 Anemone Guard
Anemones create unique design challenges.
Unlike fish, they can compress and squeeze through surprisingly small openings.
The guard therefore required:
- Increased surface coverage
- Optimized intake spacing
- Smooth flow transitions
- Strong structural support
Several prototypes were evaluated before reaching the final design.
The finished guard provides significantly more protection than running the pump uncovered while maintaining the Nero 5's excellent circulation characteristics.
Bringing the Design to Life with 3D Printing
After completing the CAD model, prototype production began.
3D printing allows rapid design iteration that would be impossible using traditional manufacturing methods.
Each version was evaluated for:
- Fitment
- Water flow
- Strength
- Installation
- Appearance
- Livestock protection
Every prototype revealed opportunities for improvement.
The design gradually evolved until all project goals were achieved.
Real-World Reef Tank Testing
Testing inside an actual reef aquarium is where good ideas become great products.
The Nero 5 Fish Guard was evaluated under real operating conditions to verify:
Water Flow
Maintaining the Nero 5's signature wide circulation pattern.
Livestock Protection
Creating meaningful separation between reef inhabitants and moving components.
Cleaning
Ensuring hobbyists could easily remove and maintain the guard.
Durability
Evaluating long-term performance inside a saltwater environment.
Benefits of the Finished Nero 5 Fish Guard
The final production design provides numerous advantages.
Fish Protection
Helps reduce the likelihood of fish contacting the intake.
Bubble Tip Anemone Protection
Provides an additional layer of safety for wandering anemones.
Snail Protection
Helps prevent snails from interfering with pump operation.
Shrimp Protection
Offers additional protection for mobile invertebrates.
Strong Water Flow
Maintains excellent circulation for coral health.
Quick Installation
Designed to install in seconds.
Factory Appearance
Looks like it belongs on the Nero 5 rather than appearing as an aftermarket accessory.
Who Should Consider a Nero 5 Fish Guard?
A Fish Guard is especially valuable if your reef aquarium contains:
- Bubble Tip Anemones
- Rock Flower Anemones
- Clownfish
- Gobies
- Firefish
- Blennies
- Shrimp
- Turbo Snails
- Trochus Snails
- Mixed Reef Aquariums
- SPS Reefs
- LPS Reefs
If your livestock represents hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars in investment, protecting it with a purpose-built guard is a simple upgrade that can provide valuable peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Nero 5 Fish Guard reduce water flow?
Every intake guard creates some restriction, but this design was optimized to preserve as much flow as possible while significantly improving livestock protection.
Will it protect my Bubble Tip Anemone?
No guard can guarantee complete protection, but it greatly reduces the risk of an anemone reaching the pump intake.
Is the guard reef safe?
Yes. The production version is manufactured from materials selected for long-term use in reef aquarium environments.
Is installation difficult?
Not at all. The guard installs quickly without modifying the Nero 5.
Why not use a foam cover?
Foam covers often clog quickly, reduce flow, require frequent maintenance, and can detract from the appearance of the aquarium. This design was engineered to maintain strong circulation while providing better aesthetics and easier maintenance.
