The OCTO Rack: Bringing the Power of the Octopus to Your Reef Tank

A Frag Rack Inspired by Nature's Ultimate Escape Artist

When it comes to reef aquariums, coral placement is everything. Finding the perfect spot for new frags while maintaining a natural-looking aquascape can be a challenge. Instead of creating another ordinary magnetic frag rack, I wanted to build something that looked like it belonged in the ocean itself.

That idea became the OCTO Rack.

Inspired by the incredible shape and movement of an octopus, the OCTO Rack features multiple flowing arms that reach out across the aquarium, creating a one-of-a-kind display for coral frags. The result is a frag rack that is not only functional but also becomes part of the aquascape.

In my latest design and creation video, I take you through the entire process—from the original concept and 3D modeling to printing, testing, and the final installation inside a reef tank.


Why an Octopus?

Octopuses are some of the most fascinating creatures in the ocean. Their arms twist, bend, and adapt to almost any environment, making them the perfect inspiration for a reef accessory designed to maximize coral placement.

The OCTO Rack uses that same philosophy.

Each arm extends into the aquarium, giving hobbyists multiple mounting points for frags while creating a dynamic structure that stands out from traditional flat shelves or simple magnetic discs.

The design creates:

  • More natural coral spacing
  • Multiple mounting locations
  • A unique visual centerpiece
  • Better opportunities for coral growth and display

Instead of hiding your frag rack, the OCTO Rack turns it into a conversation piece.


The Hidden Potential: Creating the Look of Floating Rock

One of the coolest aspects of the OCTO Rack is its potential to blend into an aquascape and create the illusion of floating live rock.

As corals grow and encrust over the arms, the structure can disappear beneath layers of life, making the coral colonies appear as though they are suspended in the water. Soft corals, zoanthids, mushrooms, and encrusting SPS can transform the rack into a living sculpture.

The branching arms also provide endless opportunities for creative aquascaping, allowing reef keepers to build unique displays that simply are not possible with conventional frag racks.

Over time, the OCTO Rack evolves from a 3D printed part into a natural extension of the reef itself.


Designing the OCTO Rack

Like many iSeaLive projects, the design started with a simple question:

What if a frag rack looked like something that actually came from the ocean?

The development process included:

  • Digital 3D modeling
  • Iterative design testing
  • Structural optimization
  • Reef-safe printing considerations
  • Prototype fitting and refinement

The goal was to create something strong enough to support growing coral colonies while maintaining the organic curves and flowing movement that make the design so distinctive.

Every arm had to balance aesthetics with function.


Built with 3D Printing Technology

3D printing allows designs that would be nearly impossible to manufacture using traditional methods.

The OCTO Rack takes full advantage of that freedom by incorporating complex curves and branching structures that mimic nature. Rapid prototyping also made it possible to test different layouts and continually improve the design until it achieved the right combination of strength, usability, and appearance.

For me, that's one of the most exciting parts of this hobby—using modern technology to create reef aquarium equipment that didn't exist before.

The OCTO Rack isn't just a place to hold coral frags.

It's a display piece.

It's an aquascaping tool.

It's a functional sculpture inspired by one of the ocean's most incredible animals.
